Ian Savage is a Professor of Instruction and Associate Department Chair in the Department of Economics at Northwestern University, affiliated with the Transportation Center. He serves as Director of the Transportation and Logistics Program, an interdisciplinary minor for undergraduates. Savage holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Leeds (1984).
His research focuses on urban public transportation economics and transportation safety, including regulatory oversight, valuing human life, and safety regulations' effectiveness. He has contributed to studies on airline, trucking, and railroad safety, authoring books like The Economics of Railroad Safety and co-editing Transportation Safety in an Age of Deregulation.
Key publications explore topics such as double-hulled tankers' cost-benefit analysis, aviation safety post-deregulation, and the impact of transportation policies on safety outcomes. He actively participates in professional organizations, including the Transportation Research Board and the Transportation Research Forum, where he served as President in 2017-18 and 2022-23, respectively.
Awarded the Distinguished Transportation Researcher Award (2023), Savage advises on transportation infrastructure and safety at the federal level. His work bridges economic theory and practical policy, addressing challenges in transit finance, infrastructure management, and risk evaluation.
