Ian Read

Ian Read is a Professor of Latin American Studies at Soka University of America, where he has taught since 2009. He serves as Senior Fellow at the Soka Institute for Global Solutions, Brazil Coordinator, and Co-Director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Human Rights, with previous roles including Director of International Studies and lecturer at Stanford University. His work bridges history, sustainability, and AI ethics in education.

Research interests include:

• Historical epidemiology and disease impact on Latin American societies
• Slavery, race, and social hierarchies in Brazil

Publications focus on Brazil's epidemiological history, slavery dynamics, and recent AI ethics work, with two monographs and over 20 peer-reviewed articles. His scientific awards include the Frederick Burkhardt Residential Fellowship and Fulbright–Hays Fellowship.
