Ian Normile is a Teaching Fellow at the University of Edinburgh’s Moray House School of Education and Sport. He holds a PhD in Education (thesis under review), an MSc in Education with distinction (2017), and a BA in Humanities and Social Sciences (2008). His career spans diverse roles, including teaching in Vietnam, leading an international primary school in China, and academic management. Currently, he teaches courses on Philosophy of Education, Research Methods, and Policy, while supervising MSc dissertations.
Research interests include philosophy of education, critical thinking in cross-cultural contexts, academic freedom, and democratic education. His work emphasizes critical dialogue as a tool for social justice and aligning education theory with practice. Recent publications explore critical thinking through Chinese philosophy and ‘critical being’ via Eastern philosophies.
Normile’s professional journey blends international experience with academic rigor. He previously taught English in Vietnam and worked in roles ranging from ranch-hand to oil refinery janitor, enriching his perspectives on education’s role in diverse societies. His PhD research focuses on fostering critical dialogue in multicultural higher education settings.
