Dr. Ian McCoy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. A nephrologist and clinical researcher, Dr. McCoy's work focuses on acute kidney injury, particularly dialysis-requiring acute kidney injury. His research addresses critical questions in kidney disease management and outcomes.
Dr. McCoy's educational background includes:
- BS in Biochemistry from The University of Texas at Austin (2009)
- MD from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School (2013)
- Internal Medicine residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (2016)
- Nephrology clinical fellowship at Stanford University (2018)
- MS in Epidemiology and Clinical Research from Stanford University (2019)
- Nephrology research fellowship at Stanford University (2020)
Dr. McCoy's research interests center on acute kidney injury (AKI), dialysis, chronic kidney disease, and related therapeutic interventions. His work investigates the complex relationships between kidney function biomarkers, the management of AKI requiring dialysis, and long-term outcomes for patients. He has made significant contributions to understanding recovery pathways after acute kidney injury and the appropriate management of patients requiring renal replacement therapy.
Dr. McCoy's extensive publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on acute kidney injury, with particular attention to biomarker validation, dialysis management, and post-AKI care. His recent work includes studies on cystatin C and creatinine-based eGFR measurements, the management of patients requiring outpatient dialysis after AKI, and clinical trials targeting recovery pathways. His research spans clinical epidemiology, patient outcomes, and practical clinical guidance for nephrologists and other healthcare providers.
Dr. McCoy has received several notable honors:
- Gold Heart Pin for Compassionate Care from West Roxbury VA Hospital (2014)
- CSRP Recognition Award for Value-Based Care from Stanford Hospital and Clinics (2018)
- Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology (FASN) (2020)
As an active researcher, Dr. McCoy has participated in numerous clinical studies and workgroups focused on acute kidney injury management. He serves on the AKINow Recovery Workgroup and has contributed to ASN Kidney Health Guidance documents. His work addresses critical gaps in knowledge regarding the outpatient management of patients with dialysis-requiring acute kidney injury and the optimization of care pathways for AKI survivors. Dr. McCoy's research has been supported by various grants that enable his team to investigate novel approaches to kidney disease management and improve patient outcomes.
Dr. McCoy is actively involved with several research initiatives including the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study and the Assessment, Serial Evaluation, and Subsequent Sequelae in Acute Kidney Injury (ASSESS-AKI) study. His work often involves multi-institutional collaborations that bring together experts in nephrology, epidemiology, and clinical research to address complex questions in kidney disease.
