Dr. Ian McCarthy is a Reader in Marine Biology at the School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor University. His research focuses on physiological and behavioral ecology of aquatic organisms, including fish, molluscs, and crustaceans. He has held academic positions since 2002, progressing from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer (2010) and Reader (2016). McCarthy’s work integrates chemical tagging (isotopes/trace elements), energy allocation in growth, and fisheries management.
Education: PhD in Zoology from Aberdeen University (1993), BSc in Marine Biology from Bangor University (1987). Research spans over 30 years, including postdocs in Scotland and Texas on fish physiology and pollutant effects.
Research interests include: (1) Energy allocation in aquatic animals, (2) Individual behavioral/physiological consistency, (3) Chemical tagging for migration studies, (4) Sustainable fisheries management. His recent projects explore impacts of ocean acidification, fisheries bycatch, and species distribution modeling.
Scientific achievements include NERC Fellowships and leadership in EU/UK marine projects. Supervised 9 PhD completions (8 as lead) and currently guides 4 students. Awards include NERC Research Fellowship (1996–1999) and FAPESP Visiting Grant (2015).
Key grants ($2.5M+ total) cover fisheries sustainability, aquaculture, and climate change effects on marine species. Active in interdisciplinary marine conservation efforts involving government and industry partnerships.
