Ian Manners is a Professor in the Department of Geography and the Environment at the University of Texas at Austin, with a Ph.D. from Oxford University. His career spans institutions including Columbia University and Waikato University, and he has served as Director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and Chair of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies.
- Education: First Class Honors Degree (1964) and D.Phil. (1969) in Geography from Oxford University
- International Experience: Lecturing and research in Egypt, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and New Zealand
His research focuses on historical cartography, urban cultural geography, and conservation practices, particularly examining how maps shaped geographical knowledge and political history of the Middle East and Mediterranean from the Renaissance to modern times. He currently curates an exhibit on European Cartography and the Ottoman World for The Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago.
Manners has contributed to key publications including European Cartography and the Ottoman World (2007) and Perspectives on Environment (1974), with research spanning topics from Byzantine city mapping to North Sea oil planning. His work bridges geographical theory, historical analysis, and Middle Eastern spatial studies.
