Professor Ian Macreadie is an Honorary Professor in the School of Science at RMIT University. His research focuses on Alzheimer’s disease, yeast genetics, and microbial biochemistry, with a strong emphasis on using yeast as a model organism for studying neurodegenerative diseases and drug discovery. He has supervised projects on yeast mitochondrial genetics and proteostasis in Alzheimer’s disease. His work spans biochemistry, microbiology, and pharmacology, integrating molecular biology and computational approaches to address complex biological challenges.
Research interests include amyloid beta toxicity, statin-based therapies, and the application of yeast models to understand protein aggregation and cellular stress. Recent publications highlight his contributions to understanding Alzheimer’s disease mechanisms, antifungal resistance in Cryptococcus, and the impact of environmental factors like aluminum on neurodegeneration. He has also explored SARS-CoV-2 variants and their pathogenicity, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to microbiology and public health.
His teaching interests cover molecular biology, yeast genetics, and biotechnology, emphasizing practical applications in drug discovery and assay development. Collaborative projects include developing biosensors and exploring synergistic compounds for disease prevention.
