Ian M. Bird is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is Program Director of the Endocrinology & Reproductive Physiology Program and Principal Investigator (PI) of its NIH T32 Training Grant. Bird chairs the NIH T32 Predoctoral Steering Committee and serves on several program committees, including Student Affairs and Admissions. He also acts as a Career Coach for the TEAM Science Program under the Women’s Health Center.
He holds a PhD from the University of London’s Middlesex Hospital Medical School (1987), a BSc (hons) in 1984 from Birmingham University, and completed a postdoctoral position at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Bird’s research focuses on pregnancy-induced physiological adaptations, particularly in uterine artery endothelium and adrenal zonation. Key areas include the role of growth factors and heptahelical receptor agonists in cell function, steroidogenesis regulation via P450c17 and 3BHSD expression, and adrenal-gonadal steroidogenesis integration in mammals. His work also addresses fetal adrenal development in sheep and primates and mechanisms underlying preeclampsia.
His teaching portfolio includes advanced courses such as OBS&GYN 710 – Reproductive Endocrine Physiology, OBS&GYN 712 – Critical Thinking in Reproductive Endocrine Physiology, and OBS&GYN 955/956 – Responsible Conduct of Research for biomedical graduate students.
Advising and grants highlight his mentorship of past ERP students, including Rachel Lane Dahn (PhD ’23) and others. As PI of the T32 grant, he supports training in endocrinology and reproductive physiology. No current ERP students are listed.
Bird’s lab and program affiliations include the Endocrinology & Reproductive Physiology Program and collaborative work through the Women’s Health Center’s TEAM Science Program.
