University of Illinois Urbana-Champaignمعرفی
Ian K Robinson is an Adjunct Professor of Physics at the London Center of Nanotechnology, University College London (UCL). He holds a Ph.D. in Biophysics from Harvard University (1981) and a M.A. in Physics from the University of Cambridge (1976). Prior to his current role, he was a professor of physics at the University of Illinois (since 1992) and a member of the technical staff at AT&T Bell Labs (1981–1992).
His research focuses on experimental condensed matter physics, particularly the application of x-ray scattering techniques to study surface structures, interfaces, and materials. Key areas include synchrotron x-ray diffraction of metal/semiconductor surfaces, coherent diffraction imaging, and solid-liquid interface dynamics. He leads in situ x-ray diffraction studies at the EpiCenter facility, analyzing heterostructures and surface phenomena like segregation profiles in Sn/Ge and Ge/Si interfaces. His work also explores relaxor ferroelectric materials like PMN, investigating structural properties under dopant influences.
Notable experimental setups include a high-speed diffractometer at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s NSLS for studying copper corrosion in liquids and the development of coherent x-ray diffraction techniques for nondestructive material analysis.
Research collaborations involve campus-wide initiatives on electrochemical surface studies and structural origins of dielectric properties in materials. His contributions bridge fundamental physics with applied materials science, emphasizing atomic-level structural insights.
