Ian Heptinstall is an Associate Professor of Project Management at the University of Birmingham, leading the MSc in Industrial Project Management. Previously, he spent 35 years in industry roles spanning project management, procurement, and supply chain leadership across sectors like chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and construction. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply and holds a B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering with Management from Imperial College London (1985).

Research Interests: Ian focuses on re-discovering foundational principles of project management through systems and complexity theory. He explores collaborative contracting, project alliances, and critical chain methodologies. His work challenges conventional project planning frameworks and advocates for systemic application of proven principles.
Professional Activities:
- Co-chair of the Association for Project Management’s Contracts & Procurement group (2020-22)
- Advisor on project alliance contracting and critical chain methodologies
- Organizing committee chair for Critical Chain 2020 conference
Labs/Teams: His academic role is teaching-focused, but he integrates research insights into MSc curriculum development. He collaborates with industry partners through training programs and consultancy.
