Professor Ian Hall is a Professor of Mathematical Epidemiology and Statistics at the University of Manchester. He holds an external position as Senior Principal Modeller at the UK Health Security Agency since 2018. His academic background includes a Master of Mathematics (1999) and a PhD in Quasi-modes and the evolutions of coherent planar vortices (2003), both from the University of Exeter.
His research focuses on mathematical epidemiology, infectious disease modeling, and statistical analysis, with particular emphasis on pandemic response, outbreak control, and vaccination strategies. Key projects include the Mathematical Epidemiology Group and contributions to the UK’s National Core Study on COVID-19 transmission. His work addresses global health challenges, such as SARS-CoV-2 dynamics, influenza, and bacterial infections like Legionnaires’ disease.
Professor Hall collaborates widely, with recent projects analyzing SARS-CoV-2 transmission risks in transport, optimizing testing strategies, and modeling disease spread in enclosed communities. His research has informed public health policies, including care home safety measures and workplace interventions during the pandemic.
