Ian Gilron is a Professor of Anesthesiology, Biomedical Sciences, and Cross-Appointed Faculty in the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s University. He serves as Director of Clinical Pain Research and holds academic roles in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Department of Biomedical & Molecular Sciences, and the Centre for Neuroscience Studies. His research focuses on chronic and acute pain mechanisms, clinical trial methodologies, and translational pain management. Gilron has led studies funded by Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) since 2000, producing influential work in New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, and Pain. He co-authored neuropathic pain guidelines for the Canadian Pain Society and chairs the Scientific Program Committee for the 2022 IASP World Congress on Pain.
Research interests emphasize pain prevention after surgery, opioid alternative therapies, and combination pharmacotherapy for conditions like fibromyalgia. His recent work includes trials on lidocaine infusions for breast cancer surgery pain and melatonin-pregabalin combinations for neuropathic pain. Gilron’s contributions bridge clinical practice and policy, addressing disparities in pain treatment and advancing evidence-based strategies through IMMPACT partnerships.
Notable grants include the CIHR Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research Chronic Pain Network. His lab, Clinical Pain Research, focuses on translating clinical findings into real-world pain management solutions. Collaborations span global networks like ACTTION and the International Association for the Study of Pain.
