Dr Ian Dickson is an Assistant Professor (Teaching) in the Department of Music at Durham University. His work focuses on twentieth-century and contemporary music, with specialized research on Giacinto Scelsi, modernist aesthetics, and intersections between music and language. He holds a PhD in musicology from the University of Cambridge and has taught composition and analysis at the University of Cambridge for many years.

Research Interests: Explores avant-garde aesthetics through the lens of Giacinto Scelsi’s works, examining musical grammar, semiotics, and the relationship between orality and musical rhetoric. His research bridges composition practice with analytical methodologies.
Performance History: His compositions have been performed by leading ensembles including BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, and Nouvel Ensemble Moderne. Works have been broadcast on BBC Radio.
Supervision: Currently supervises PhD candidates Darach Sharkey and Mike Mitchell. Focuses on composition, analysis, and music history.
