Dr Ian Clifton serves as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds School of Medicine within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. He is a Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine practicing at St James's University Hospital, Leeds Chest Clinic, and Seacroft Hospital, where he acts as Clinical Lead for Respiratory Medicine and Co-Director of the Yorkshire Severe Asthma Network.
His educational background includes a BMSc (Hons) and MB ChB from the University of Dundee (1998), followed by postgraduate respiratory training in West Yorkshire and an MD from the University of Leeds focused on Environmental survival of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains in people with cystic fibrosis.
Dr Clifton's research spans severe asthma, bronchiectasis, and cystic fibrosis, with expanding interests in air quality impacts on lung health and aerosol transmission dynamics developed through cross-disciplinary collaboration with Civil Engineering researchers. His clinical-academic work integrates patient care with translational research in respiratory infections and environmental health.

He actively contributes to medical education as Co-Lead for the 5th year MB ChB program and teaches respiratory medicine across 1st, 3rd, and 5th year undergraduate courses.
