Professor Ian Clark is a faculty member in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of East Anglia, holding the title of Professor of Musculoskeletal Biology. His research focuses on cartilage biology and osteoarthritis, with expertise in proteases, microRNAs, and dietary bioactives. He has led groundbreaking studies on osteoarthritis mechanisms, including the role of miRNAs in cartilage homeostasis and the efficacy of sulforaphane from broccoli in joint health. Clark has also investigated Dupuytren’s disease, linking it to protease activity.
Education: Biochemistry graduate, PhD in Rheumatology Research Unit (Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge), followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Dartmouth Medical School (USA) and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals.
Research Interests: Osteoarthritis pathology, microRNA regulation in cartilage, dietary interventions for joint health, and protease roles in Dupuytren’s disease. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
Key Projects: Current grants include the DISCOVER platform for dietary bioactives screening, DeSignA study on arthritis metabolomics, and investigations into MMP-14 inhibition for Dupuytren’s therapy. He leads the Clark Laboratory and collaborates internationally on musculoskeletal research.
Awards: Recipient of Arthritis Research Campaign fellowships, including the Copeman Fellowship. Active in academic committees like the Arthritis Research UK Research and Academic Capacity Committee.
