Dr. Ian Caine is Associate Professor at the Margie and Bill Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design, University of Texas at San Antonio. As Director of the Center for Urban and Regional Planning Research, his work interrogates the intersection of urban morphology, water systems, and socioeconomic dynamics across the American Sunbelt.
- Focuses on decentralized urbanism in the Texas Triangle
- Develops digital humanities methods for suburban chronology
- Advocates for water-driven regional planning frameworks
His research interests span three interrelated domains:
- Suburban Epistemologies – Challenging concentric city models through spatiotemporal analysis of San Antonio's automotive thoroughfares and annexation histories
- Hydrological Urbanism – Proposing watershed-based planning alternatives to westward expansion myths, particularly in post-Katrina contexts
- Infrastructure Critique – Analyzing political dimensions of infrastructure through projects like Texas' Trans-Texas Corridor and Trump's border wall proposals
While no explicit student list appears, his 2015-2017 design studio collaborations with Rahman Azari and Derek Hoeferlin demonstrate pedagogical integration of ecological performance tools. Though scientific awards aren't directly attributed to him, his 2023 Way Beyond Bigness publication highlights significant disciplinary impact.
