Sir Ian Byatt is a distinguished economist and former academic with extensive public service. He held academic roles as a Lecturer at the University of Durham and Senior Lecturer at the London School of Economics (LSE). His career shifted to government roles, including Under Secretary at the UK Treasury, Deputy Chief Economic Advisor, and Director General of OFWAT (1989–2000). He later chaired the Water Industry Commission for Scotland and contributed to economic policy through Frontier Economics. He is a Fellow of Birkbeck, University of London, where he served on the Board of Governors and led the Finance and General Purposes Committee.
