Ian Bucknell is an Associate Professor of Journalism at the School of Media and Communication, University of Leeds. With a professional background at the BBC spanning two decades, he brings industry expertise to his academic role. He previously served as co-convenor of the Journalism Research Group and led the Journalism BA program (2018–2022), where he developed innovative modules including Digital Journalism and Camera and Editing for Journalists.

His research focuses on digital journalism practices and journalism education, supported by collaborations with UK news organizations like ITN, Financial Times, and Sky News. He is currently writing a textbook on digital journalism practices for Peter Lang.
Research on remote interviewing during the pandemic revealed increased inclusion of non-elite voices in TV news. This work was presented at the MeCCSA 2022 conference, with journal publication pending.
