Professor Iain Whitaker is a Clinical Professor and Chair of Burns & Plastic Surgery at Swansea University Medical School, with an honorary role at the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery. He leads the Reconstructive Surgery and Regenerative Medicine Research Group, the largest of its kind in the UK. His roles include Surgical Specialty Lead for Health & Care Research Wales and Academic Lead for the UK Plastic Surgery Training Committee.
Whitaker graduated from Trinity Hall College, Cambridge University in 2001. He holds editorial positions at journals such as Frontiers in Surgery and Annals of Plastic Surgery. His research focuses on 3D bioprinting, tissue engineering, big data applications in surgery, and NLP for clinical workflows. He has secured over £4M in grants, overseeing a team of 8 Clinical Lecturers and 2 Foundation Academic Doctors.
Key research themes include facial cartilage regeneration, lymphedema epidemiology, and AI-driven surgical quality assurance. Whitaker’s work bridges clinical practice and innovation, with contributions to global initiatives like the ICE-COVID trial for antiviral nasal sprays and burn service reorganization during the pandemic.
Recipient of over 20 prestigious awards, including the Clarke Medal and Mentor Prize, he advocates for standardized skin cancer audits and telemedicine integration. Collaborations span academic institutions and industry, emphasizing translational research to improve patient outcomes.
