Iain Mathieson is an Associate Professor of Genetics at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine. His research focuses on human population genetics, demographic history, natural selection, and complex traits. He leads the Mathieson Lab within the Department of Genetics, which actively recruits graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
His educational background includes a BA in Mathematics from Cambridge University (2005), an MPhil in Statistical Science from Cambridge University (2006), and a DPhil in Genomic Medicine & Statistics from Oxford University (2013). He completed postdoctoral training at UC Berkeley's Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing (2014) and Harvard University's Department of Genetics (2014-2017).
Mathieson's research examines human evolution using both present-day and ancient DNA to understand demographic history, natural selection, and the distribution of complex phenotypes among populations. His lab develops statistical and computational methods to analyze large genomic datasets, with particular interest in natural selection in human evolution, human history in ancient and recent past, and the genetic basis of phenotypic variation across populations.
His publication record shows consistent output across evolutionary genetics, with recent work focusing on natural selection detection methods, ancient DNA analysis, population structure, and the relationship between ancestry and complex traits. His lab has produced significant contributions to understanding selection in Bronze Age Britain, the evolution of skin pigmentation, and the impact of demographic history on polygenic scores.
Mathieson mentors multiple PhD students including Georgia Mies, Fabian Ramos-Almodovar, and Jess Knapp, along with postdoctoral researchers such as Alan Aw, Laura Colbran, and Samantha Cox. His former students and postdocs have secured faculty positions at institutions including the University of Minnesota and Bryn Mawr College.
