IGNACIO GARCIA GONZALEZ

Dr. Ignacio García-González is a Professor at the Department of Botany, University of Santiago de Compostela, affiliated with the Higher Polytechnic School of Engineering. He is a leading dendrochronologist specializing in quantitative wood anatomy.

Education:

• PhD from University of Santiago de Compostela (1999) with thesis: "Dendroecological study of Quercus robur L. in northern Galicia" under Dr. Elvira Díaz Vizcaino and Dr. Antonio Martínez Cortizas.

His research focuses on dendrochronology, wood anatomy, and plant ecology, with applications in environmental science and historical studies. He has developed tree-ring chronologies for climate reconstruction and analyzed timber provenance in Gothic architecture.

Key publications include studies on Segovia Cathedral's roof structures (2017), black pine radial growth patterns (2013), and chestnut earlywood vessel chronologies (2004). His work bridges ecological analysis with historical disaster impacts.

He contributes to the Strategic Grouping in Sustainable Management and Production of Bioresources (BioReDes) and the BIOAPLIC research group at the Institute of Agricultural Biodiversity and Rural Development (IBADER).
