Hưng Nguyễn is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Science & Environmental Change at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on the interplay between the water cycle and human societies, using paleoclimate proxies (e.g., tree rings) and climate models to study historical and future hydrological changes. He collaborates with historians and archaeologists to understand societal adaptations to environmental shifts, aiming to inform climate resilience strategies.
Education:
- PhD in Urban Design & Planning, Singapore University of Technology and Design (201x)
- MS in Water Management, Delft University of Technology (201x)
- MS in Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore (201x)
- BEng in Environmental Engineering (joint program), National University of Singapore and University of Melbourne (201x)
Research Interests: Dendrochronology, paleohydrology, climate-water nexus, and societal adaptation. His work bridges natural and social sciences to address climate change challenges. Recent studies include drought reconstructions in Asia, monsoon dynamics, and ENSO impacts on water resources.
Grants: Recipient of an NSF grant for paleostreamflow reconstruction in Southeast Asia. His research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to hydrological modeling and climate risk assessment.
Publications: Over 20 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Science Advances, Geophysical Research Letters, and Water Resources Research. Recent work highlights include analysis of the 2022 Po River drought and long-term hydrological trends in monsoon Asia.
