Hyung Kim is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Washington, Bothell. His research focuses on the chemistry and biology of metalloproteins, particularly those containing copper and iron (as heme), which play crucial roles in cellular processes such as electron transfer, oxygen transport, and catalytic transformations of stable molecules like methane to methanol.
Hyung Kim earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Science from the University of Kansas, where he studied metal binding bio-compounds. He furthered his research through postdoctoral work at the University of Minnesota and the University of Utah, focusing on metalloprotein chemistry and cellular metal trafficking.
His research integrates spectroscopic, biochemical, and molecular biology techniques to investigate enzymatic reactions of metalloproteins involved in environmental processes, including ammonia and methane oxidation pathways. He also explores intracellular heme trafficking mechanisms using yeast as a model system to address toxicity issues associated with free heme.
Teaching interests include Instrumental Analysis and Bioinorganic Chemistry. He actively involves students in research, aiming to bridge classroom learning with practical scientific engagement.
