Hyung J. Kim is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University, where he has held faculty positions since 1992. His research focuses on theoretical and computational chemistry, particularly solvation effects in green solvents (e.g., ionic liquids, supercritical water), supercapacitor design, and multi-domain protein dynamics. He has published extensively on these topics and leads the Kim Group, collaborating with institutions like Seoul National University and the Korea Institute for Advanced Study.

- Appointments: Head of Chemistry (2002–2015), Interim Head (2001–2002), and Visiting Associate Professor at University of Colorado (2001)
Research Interests span three domains: (1) Green Solvents (ionic liquids, CO2/CS2 capture mechanisms); (2) Energy Storage (supercapacitors, pseudocapacitors, nanoporous electrodes); and (3) Protein Dynamics (plasminogen activation, inter-domain interactions). His work combines statistical mechanics, quantum chemistry, and molecular dynamics simulations to address environmental, biological, and energy challenges.
Recent Publications highlight computational studies of ionic liquid properties, solvation mechanisms in green solvents, and electrocatalytic interfaces for energy applications. His group’s simulations have elucidated anomalous capacitance behaviors in graphene oxide systems and multi-domain protein conformations.

Advising has involved mentoring researchers like Youngseon Shim (now at Seoul National University) and Nilesh Dhumal. His group collaborates with experimental teams in physics (M.Y. Labs utilize molecular dynamics and density functional theory to study solvation, capacitance, and protein activation pathways.
