Dr. Hyo-Sung Ro is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Dalhousie University's Faculty of Medicine, affiliated since 1989. His research focuses on the role of chronic inflammation in cancer and metabolic diseases, particularly investigating the adipocyte enhancer-binding protein 1 (AEBP1) in atherogenesis, mammary tumorigenesis, and type 2 diabetes.
Education: PhD from McMaster University. Research emphasizes signaling mechanisms linking inflammation to disease via macrophage activation, adipose tissue metabolism, and stromal-epithelial interactions. Key projects include:
- Project 1: AEBP1's role in cholesterol homeostasis and atherosclerosis
- Project 2: AEBP1's role in mammary gland development and tumorigenesis
- Project 3: Inflammation's role in obesity-induced insulin resistance
Publications focus on AEBP1's regulatory functions, using transgenic mice and knockout models. Findings highlight AEBP1 as a pro-atherogenic factor and potential therapeutic target. Collaborative work includes bone marrow transplantation and biochemical assays.
Key contributions include identifying AEBP1's role in NF-κB activation, PPARγ1/LXRα regulation, and lactation defects. His lab employs advanced techniques like Q-PCR, transfection, and stromal restoration experiments.
