Prof. Huub van Baar is a Professor of Politics at Leuven International and European Studies (LINES) within KU Leuven's Faculty of Social Sciences, Belgium. He also holds a Senior Research Fellow position at the Amsterdam Centre for Globalisation Studies (ACGS) in the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Humanities. His research focuses on critical security studies, migration, and the socio-political position of Roma minorities in Europe. He coordinates a 12-year German Research Foundation (DFG)-funded project on Roma minority formation and transformation in modern European history, part of the 'Dynamics of Security' collaborative research center.

Research Interests: Van Baar examines securitization of migration, Roma identity formation, and the intersection of security-development-citizenship regimes. Key themes include racialization, governmentality, and transnational activism of Roma communities. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary policy critiques, particularly post-1989 Eastern Europe.
Academic Contributions: He co-edits the New Directions in Romani Studies book series (Berghahn) and has authored influential works like The Roma and Their Struggle for Identity in Contemporary Europe (2020) and The Securitization of the Roma in Europe (2019). His research highlights how Roma minorities navigate state policies, memory practices, and racialized governance.
Advising & Collaborations: Leads the Between Minority Protection and Securitization project with Regina Kreide and coordinates international teams across Giessen, Marburg, and KU Leuven. His work intersects with the Institute of Political Science at Justus Liebig University Giessen and the Herder Institute.
Labs/Teams: Active in KU Leuven's LINES, the Dynamics of Security CRC (Germany), and collaborates with the Central European University's Angéla Kóczé on Romani studies.
