Huijie Lu is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Vermont (UVM), affiliated with the Water Resources Institute. His research focuses on environmental biological processes and water/wastewater treatment, with a particular emphasis on antibiotic resistance mechanisms, microbial ecology in wastewater systems, and nitrogen cycling technologies.
His work explores the impacts of environmental stressors (e.g., antibiotics, nanoparticles) on microbial communities and bioremediation processes. He has contributed to advancements in bioelectrochemical systems, anammox-denitrification processes, and formate-mediated nitrogen removal strategies. Recent studies highlight synergies between chemical compounds and antibiotics in driving resistance evolution, as well as optimizing wastewater treatment efficiency through process modeling and material innovations.
Lu’s research integrates metabolomics, genomics, and engineering principles to address challenges in sustainable water management. His studies on comammox bacteria and granular biofilms underscore efforts to enhance nitrogen removal in wastewater systems. Collaborative projects with the Water Resources Institute further align his work with broader environmental and public health goals.
He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering and maintains active research collaborations in microbial ecology, biotechnology, and environmental toxicology. His findings have been published in high-impact journals, reflecting his commitment to advancing interdisciplinary solutions for global water challenges.
