Prof. Huib Kerstjens is a Professor at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Groningen Research Institute for Asthma and COPD (GRIAC). He holds leadership roles as Vice Chair of the Netherlands Respiratory Society (NRS) and Stichting Beoordeling Ethiek Biomedisch Onderzoek (BEBO), and serves on the board of the Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre Lareb.
His research focuses on COPD, asthma, and respiratory drug therapies, with a particular emphasis on anti-inflammatory mechanisms, bronchodilator efficacy, and translational studies in pulmonary medicine. Recent work includes randomized trials evaluating treatments like tiotropium and azithromycin, as well as biomarker-driven approaches to asthma phenotyping.
Prof. Kerstjens actively collaborates internationally and engages in clinical trials, guideline development, and public health initiatives. He has supervised doctoral students (e.g., Anouk Schimberg) and contributed to datasets on bronchoscopic treatments and pulmonary artery diameters in COPD patients.
