Dr Hugo Moline is a Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Newcastle's School of Architecture and Built Environment within the College of Engineering, Science and Environment. An architect, artist, and urbanist, he co-directs MAPA Art & Architecture and specializes in democratic design processes for collective client groups including migrant housing cooperatives and public space users.
His research explores three interconnected strands:
- Discursive research into participatory architecture history and theory
- Applied research developing collaborative design processes for public housing and space
- Speculative design research creating alternative relational systems through art installations and frameworks
Moline's recent publications demonstrate strong thematic continuity across creative and academic outputs, with recurring focus on
- Participatory methodologies in architectural practice
- Critical examinations of utopian thinking
- Material innovation in sustainable building
- Community-led spatial interventions
Moline currently holds two active research grants totaling $80,000:
- Fast Slow Prototype Build ($50,000 from Mudtec Pty Ltd, 2025)
- Regional Urbanism: Activating the Hunter Innovation Precinct ($30,000 from Muswellbrook Shire Council, 2024)
As co-director of MAPA Art & Architecture, Moline leads a collaborative practice that bridges social engagement and spatial design. Their installations and frameworks function as both research outputs and practical tools for community empowerment, with recent projects including Earth Building Exhibition (2024) and The Plant Agency Series (2024) that explore material innovation and ecological relationships.
