Hugo Bonin is a Researcher at the Department of History and Ethnology, University of Jyväskylä. His work focuses on the conceptual, practical, and theoretical dimensions of democracy across historical contexts. He holds a PhD in Political Science from Université Paris VIII and Université du Québec à Montréal (2020), with a dissertation analyzing the conceptual history of democracy in 19th-century Britain. Prior to his current position, he conducted research at the Center of History of Political Thought, Queen Mary, University of London (2020–2022).
His research interests span conceptual history methodologies, digital humanities approaches to political ideas, and comparative analyses of democratic institutions. He has published widely in journals such as British Politics, Global Intellectual History, and Parliaments, Estates and Representation, with a forthcoming monograph on the evolution of the term 'democracy' in Britain (1770–1920). His current project, Political Representation: Tensions between Parliament and the People, explores shifting democratic paradigms from the Age of Revolutions to contemporary debates.
Bonin’s scholarly contributions also include essays on sortition in politics, digital methods in historical research, and comparative studies of direct democracy instruments. His interdisciplinary work bridges political theory, historical linguistics, and quantitative conceptual history.
