Dr Hugo Anderson-Whymark is a Visiting Professor at the Archaeology Institute, University of the Highlands and Islands, and Curator of Prehistory at National Museums Scotland since 2018. With over 20 years of professional experience, he specializes in Palaeolithic to Neolithic archaeology, lithic analysis, and innovative photogrammetry techniques. His research contributions include over 30 peer-reviewed articles, seven monographs, and 70+ lithics reports.
He has held lecturing roles at the Universities of Bournemouth (2009–2010) and the Highlands and Islands (2017–2018). Key projects include directing excavations at Rosemarkie Caves (2010), co-directing Pullyhour Henge with Prof. Richard Bradley (2008), and currently co-directing Tresness Stalled Cairn with Prof. Vicki Cummings. His work integrates field archaeology, museum curation, and digital documentation, emphasizing collaborative research networks across the UK and Ireland.
Anderson-Whymark’s expertise in flint and stone tool analysis has positioned him as a leading figure in lithic studies, with publications in top journals like Antiquity and the Proceedings of the Prehistory Society. His photogrammetry innovations have advanced archaeological recording practices, particularly in Orkney and Caithness regions.
