Dr. Hugh Willmott is a Senior Lecturer in European Historical Archaeology at the University of Sheffield's School of History, Philosophy and Digital Humanities. He serves as Archaeological Advisor to the Diocese of Sheffield and specializes in medieval monastic archaeology and landscape studies.
Education includes a PhD in Medieval and Early Modern Archaeology from Durham University, along with MA and BA degrees in Archaeology. His fieldwork directs student training excavations at significant sites including Thornton Abbey, Crowland, and Cerne Abbey.
Research focuses on:
- Medieval and early modern material culture
- Archaeology of monasticism and dissolution
- Anglo-Saxon Christian settlements
- Black Death mass burials
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on ecclesiastical landscapes and material culture analysis, with recent work examining bone mineral changes through spectroscopy, early Christian ivory artifacts, and biomolecular studies of Anglo-Saxon burials.
