Dr. Hugh Upton is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Health and Social Care, Swansea University, within the Interprofessional Studies Department. He holds a BA in Philosophy from University College London (1977), an MPhil (1982), and a PhD (2000). Previously, he taught at UCL and the University of St Andrews before joining Swansea in 1998. His research focuses on moral philosophy and medical ethics, particularly ethical dilemmas in healthcare, legal frameworks, and healthcare policy.
Teaching responsibilities include modules such as Philosophy, Ethics & Medicine, Health Care Law and Ethics, and Managing Complex Care in Rapidly Changing Situations. He leads the MA in Health Care Law and Ethics programme. His publications span bioethics, healthcare law, and philosophical inquiries into identity and moral theory.
Recent research explores topics like organ donation ethics, healthcare rationing, and sport ethics. He has supervised PhDs on ethical dilemmas in disaster healthcare and nursing students’ ethical development.
