Hugh M. Van Horn serves as Adjunct Professor of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Rochester, a position held since 1996. His extensive academic career includes full Professorship (1977-1996), Department Chair (1980-1986, 1992-1993), and Acting Associate Dean roles at Rochester, alongside leadership as Director of the NSF Division of Astronomical Sciences (1993-2000) and Senior Science Advisor.
Educational milestones include a BSc in Physics from Case Institute of Technology (1960) and PhD in Physics from Cornell University (1966), followed by postdoctoral work at Rochester.
His research dominates theoretical astrophysics and plasma physics, focusing on white dwarf/neutron star structure, evolution, and non-radial oscillation spectra, alongside investigations into ultra-high-density matter properties including nuclear reaction rates and equations of state. Current work involves magnetic field dynamo generation in asymptotic-giant-branch stars and completion of a white dwarf star monograph.
Professional recognition includes:
- Election as AAAS Fellow (1991)
Advising and grant activities are undocumented in available sources, though his Laboratory for Laser Energetics tenure (1985-1996) and ongoing Rochester collaborations demonstrate sustained research engagement.
Active institutional service spans NSF leadership, AUI Board membership (1983-1993), and American Astronomical Society offices, complemented by Senior Executive Service status since 1996.
