Dr. Hugh Henry is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Western University. His research focuses on plant ecology, biogeochemistry, and global change biology, with a particular emphasis on winter ecosystem dynamics, nitrogen cycling, and plant-microbe interactions. He leads the WINNTER project exploring winter warming and nitrogen effects on temperate ecosystems. Henry has extensive field and lab expertise, including global change experiments and decomposition studies.
He teaches courses such as BIO 2483A (Ecology), BIO 4944G (Seminar in Ecology and Evolution), and BIO 9419B (Global Change Biology). His lab has produced over 100 peer-reviewed publications and supervised numerous graduate and undergraduate students in topics ranging from frost tolerance in legumes to biochar effects on nitrogen retention.
Key projects include investigating soil frost impacts on plant communities, long-term effects of warming/N addition, and cover crop nitrogen retention. His work bridges field experiments, isotope tracing, and theoretical modeling to address climate change impacts at individual to ecosystem scales.
