Hua-Yu Sebastian Cherng is Professor of International Education and Vice Dean for Research and Equity at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. His work focuses on marginalized youth, particularly exploring race/ethnicity dynamics between China and the US, immigrant adaptation, and social capital in educational contexts. Cherng holds a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor’s from MIT, with prior experience teaching in a San Francisco middle school and a rural Chinese college.
His research spans comparative education systems, cultural capital transfers among adolescents, and gender disparities in education. Notable contributions include studies on racial disparities in school discipline, pandemic-era health policy impacts on Asian businesses, and barriers faced by immigrant families.
