Dr. Hoyong Chung is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at the Florida A&M University-Florida State University (FAMU-FSU) College of Engineering. His research focuses on developing sustainable and biomedical polymers, leveraging lignin and CO₂ to create biodegradable, recyclable materials with applications in adhesives, drug delivery, and environmental remediation. Chung holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University (2011) and completed postdoctoral research at Caltech under Robert H. Grubbs (2014).
Key research areas include bio-inspired polymers, smart materials, and catalysts for polymer synthesis. His lab has pioneered lignin-based polymers forCO₂ capture and biomedical adhesives. Notable achievements include being named a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors (2025) and securing NSF and USDA grants for sustainable polymer research.
Chung advises multiple Ph.D. students and postdocs, collaborating with institutions like Mayo Clinic and the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology. His lab emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining organic synthesis, polymer physics, and biomedical applications. Recent work highlights include advanced CO₂ capturing polymers and self-healing lignin composites.
