Howard Tran is the Logan A. Richmond Endowed Professor of Art at Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA, where he has served on the faculty since 2002, advancing from Assistant to Associate and then to full Professor in 2017. He teaches sculpture, drawing, ceramics, figure modeling, and senior seminar courses. His academic home is in the Department of Art within the College of Arts and Sciences.
Education:
- M.F.A. in Sculpture, Boston University, Boston, MA (2000)
- B.F.A. in Sculpture, Academy of Art University, San Francisco, CA (1998)
Tran’s artistic practice explores themes of cultural identity, immigration, ancestral memory, and the synthesis of Eastern and Western traditions. His work, often in mixed media, sculpture, and installation, reflects his experience as a Chinese Vietnamese American. He uses traditional materials like rice, burlap, and clay to evoke heritage, while his naturalistic forms draw from classical Western figurative art. His research interests include Zen and art, identity and place, and art education in liberal arts contexts.
While no traditional academic articles are listed, his extensive exhibition record and creative output serve as significant scholarly contributions in the field of visual art. His works have been featured in over 60 solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally, including at Bucknell University, La Salle University, and the Richard Nixon Presidential Library.
