Hossein Omoumi serves as Maseeh Professor in Persian Performing Arts at the University of California, Irvine's Department of Music, where he specializes in Persian classical music, ney performance, and traditional Iranian instrumentation.
His academic background includes:
- Doctorate in Architecture from the University of Florence, Italy (funded by Italian government scholarship)
- Bachelor's degree with honors in Architecture from National University of Iran
Professor Omoumi's research centers on Persian classical music theory and instrument innovation, particularly regarding the ney (reed flute), tombak, and daf. He developed the Pish Radif educational system for teaching Persian music principles and pioneered advancements in the construction of traditional Iranian instruments. His performance career spans major international venues including the Getty Center, World Music Institute, and Paris' Théâtre de la Ville.
Throughout his career, Omoumi has held academic appointments at Tehran University, Iran National Television's Center for Conservation and Diffusion of Music, Sorbonne University's Center for Oriental Music Studies, and the Ethnomusicology departments of UCLA and the University of Washington.
