Hosop Shin is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). His primary affiliation is through the School of Engineering and Technology, where he leads the Energy Storage Materials & Systems (ESMS) Laboratory. He holds a Ph.D. (2015) and M.S. (2009) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, and a B.S. (2007) in Automotive Engineering from Kookmin University.
Shin's research focuses on electrochemistry, mechanics, and interfacial chemistry in energy storage systems. His work includes advanced synthesis techniques for energy materials, atomistic-scale modeling of chemical/mechanical properties, and multi-scale/multi-physics modeling of Li-ion batteries and fuel cells. He has pioneered methods for cathode regeneration using delithiation processes and developed novel green solvent-based recycling strategies for battery materials.
His recent publications emphasize acoustic emission analysis for battery diagnostics, multi-scale degradation modeling, and sustainable recycling technologies. Notable achievements include the 2022 ORAU Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award. Shin has also contributed to industry-oriented research through collaborations with Nissan Technical Center and the University of Michigan.
His laboratory integrates experimental and computational approaches to address challenges in energy storage, with a focus on improving battery efficiency, recyclability, and safety through innovative material science and systems engineering.
