Prof. Hongwei Sun is a Professor in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department at Northeastern University, joining in 2020. Previously, he served as a full professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell since 2005. His research focuses on multiphase thermal transport, acoustic wave sensors, thermal management, and nanotechnology. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1998) and has held postdoctoral and research roles at URI and MIT.
Research interests include thermal energy storage materials, microchannel cooling systems, and bioMEMS. He leads NSF-funded projects on low-cost biosensors and thermal management of smart textiles. Key collaborations include work with the University of Connecticut and ECE Professor Nian Sun on disease surveillance via wastewater analysis. Awards include the 2017 ASME ICNMM Best Poster Award and the UML Entrepreneurial Faculty Award.
Prof. Sun’s grants include projects on battery thermal management (with Juner Zhu) and nanoscale metal networks in phase change materials. His work spans interdisciplinary applications in energy, healthcare, and environmental monitoring.
