Hongfei Lin

Professor Hongfei Lin is a faculty member at the Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering, Washington State University. His research focuses on catalytic processes for sustainability, particularly converting biomass and CO₂ into renewable fuels and chemicals. He holds a B.E. and M.S. from Tsinghua University and a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University, followed by postdoctoral research at UC Santa Barbara. Prior to academia, he worked in industry on alternative energy technologies, including biomass-to-fuels conversion.

His research interests include heterogeneous catalysis for CO₂ capture/utilization, bioenergy production via biomass conversion, and designing advanced functional materials. Recent work highlights include developing ionic-pair engineered frameworks for direct air CO₂ capture and novel catalysts for plastic recycling. He leads the 'Catalysis for Sustainability' lab, aiming to create next-generation sustainable technologies.

Key technical contributions span electrocatalytic water splitting, hydrogen storage systems, and converting lignocellulosic biomass into value-added chemicals. His work bridges fundamental material science with applied energy solutions, emphasizing scalability and economic viability.
