Honey Crawford is an Assistant Professor of English and Dramatic Literature at New York University. She holds a PhD in Theatre Studies from Cornell University, alongside degrees from DePaul University, California Institute of the Arts, and Cornell’s MA program. Her work focuses on Afro-Brazilian cultural performance, Black feminisms, and postcolonial theories, emphasizing embodied knowledge and oral traditions. Her book project, Negra Demais!: Overwhelming Performances of Afro Brazilian Femininity, examines theatrical traditions challenging socio-spatial containment through 'overwhelming' aesthetics. She has served as a dramaturgical researcher for Broadway productions like Black Orpheus and Orfeu da Conceição.
Her research interests include diasporic performance, contemporary drama, and dance studies. Notable awards include a Mellon Fellowship (2022), University of Chicago Society of Fellows Collegiate Fellowship (2018–2022), and New York Council for the Humanities Public Humanities Fellowship (2016). She has also contributed to the Poetry Foundation’s Harriet blog. Her work bridges scholarly research with practical contributions to theatre and performance.
