Professor Hom Dhakal is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Portsmouth, leading the Portsmouth Centre for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing (PCAMM). He also holds visiting professorships at the University of Borås, Sweden, and an honorary chair at Madan Bhandari University in Nepal. His expertise lies in sustainable composite materials, biobased materials, and advanced manufacturing processes. He has supervised 11 PhD students and examined over 60 others. Dhakal is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of multiple institutions, including the Higher Education Academy and the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining.
Research Interests: Development of sustainable lightweight composites, biocomposites, and hybrid materials. Current projects include the Interreg SeaBioComp and FLOWER initiatives, focusing on sustainable packaging and materials for engineering applications. He has published over 145 peer-reviewed papers, three books, and serves on editorial boards for journals like Composites Part C and Heliyon.
Grants & Awards: Extensive grants in materials science and sustainability. Awards include Fellowships from HEA, IET, and IOM3. His work integrates lean-green principles with sustainable manufacturing, addressing environmental and industrial challenges.
Labs/Teams: Director of PCAMM, involved in Knowledge Transfer Partnerships for sustainable packaging design. He chairs international conferences and delivers invited talks on sustainable composites.
