Holly Shissler is an Associate Professor of Ottoman and Modern Turkish History and Director of Graduate Studies for Modern Fields at the University of Chicago's Department of History. She has been teaching there since 1999. Her research focuses on Ottoman intellectual history, nationalism, and the history of the Ottoman press, with particular attention to the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic.
She holds an A.B. in Anthropology from Vassar College and a Ph.D. in History from UCLA. Her work bridges Ottoman and Turkish studies, examining themes such as World War I's impact, early Republican-era developments, and the role of print media in shaping modern Turkish identity.
Shissler's notable publication includes Between Two Empires: Ahmet Agaoglu and the New Turkey (2003), which explores the life and ideas of a key figure in Turkey's modernization. She is affiliated with the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and regularly teaches courses on modern Middle Eastern history, Ottoman press history, and 20th-century Turkey and Iran.
