Miss Hloni Mthiyane is a Lecturer in the Department of Virology at the University of the Witwatersrand. Her research focuses on viral pathogenesis, drug resistance, and public health implications of infectious diseases, particularly HIV and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
- BTech
- NDip
- MMedSc (University of KwaZulu-Natal)
Her work spans molecular characterization of viral mutations, development of affordable diagnostic methods, and epidemiological studies of HIV drug resistance trends in South Africa. She contributes to understanding genetic susceptibility to RSV severity in infants and evaluates HIV self-testing practices among university students.
Recent publications highlight her expertise in virological failure mechanisms, population-based HIV surveillance, and RSV fusion protein dynamics. All studies emphasize resource-limited settings and translational applications.
