Hiroshi Kabaya is Professor at Waseda University’s Faculty of International Research and Education and its Graduate School of Japanese Applied Linguistics, and concurrently teaches in the Global Education Center. Holding both MA and Doctor of Arts degrees from Waseda, he has spent his entire career developing the field of taigū communication—the study and teaching of polite, honorific and role-appropriate language use in Japanese.

Research & Interests:
Kabaya’s work integrates Japanese linguistics, sociolinguistics and language pedagogy. He analyzes honorific expressions, politeness strategies and broader communicative acts, then translates findings into curricula, textbooks and role-play methodologies for learners from secondary school to short-term international students.
Publications & Trends:
Over three decades he has produced more than 100 refereed articles and authoritative books such as Honorific Language Master and Treatise Communication Theory. His recent output emphasizes practical classroom applications, teacher training and empirical evaluation of communication-activity-based lessons.
