Hiro Hata is an Associate Professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Architecture and Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University at Buffalo's School of Architecture and Planning. He is also affiliated with the MS in Real Estate Development Program. His roles include directing the Urban Design Specialization in the Master of Urban Planning program and leading the Urban Design Graduate Research Group in the architecture program. He holds a Master of Architecture from Washington University and a post-professional degree in urban design from Harvard University.
His research focuses on urban structures, community development, and the intersection of design, history, and theory. Notable projects include the Niagara Waterfront Opportunity Area Plan (Outstanding Planning Award), Bailey-Genesee Neighborhood revitalization (APA Awards), and the Gates Circle Hospital Reuse Competition (First Prize). He has also contributed to landscape master plans for UB campuses and the Niagara Falls Pine Avenue District.
Professionally, Hata is a registered architect in Massachusetts and a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Institute of Urban Design. His interdisciplinary work spans academic leadership, urban planning consulting, and collaborative design initiatives.
