Prof Himadri Gupta is a Professor of Bioengineering and Biophysics at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), affiliated with the School of Engineering and Materials Science. As Director of Graduate Studies, he oversees postgraduate research programs. His work focuses on structure-function relationships in biological tissues, particularly collagen-based materials like bone and cartilage, using advanced imaging techniques such as synchrotron X-ray scattering. His research aims to understand nanoscale mechanics for biomaterial design and diagnostic tools for degenerative disorders.
Teaching includes modules like EMS430U (Materials Engineering) and EMS737P (Cell and Tissue Biomechanics). Recent funding includes a £451k EPSRC grant (2021–2025) for Tomo-SAXS imaging and MRC grants exploring cartilage and collagen dynamics. Over 150 peer-reviewed publications span bioengineering, biomechanics, and materials science, with emphasis on collagen mechanics, fibrosis, and biological armor materials.
Key research themes: (1) Multiscale imaging of connective tissues, (2) Mechanobiology of musculoskeletal diseases, (3) Biomimetic materials inspired by nature. His lab develops correlative imaging platforms linking nano- to macroscale structure-function relationships. Current projects investigate fibrosis progression, osteoporosis mechanisms, and laser-based tissue repair technologies.
