Professor Hilton Staniland is an Honorary Professor at Queen Mary University of London’s Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS), specializing in maritime and admiralty law. He holds adjunct roles at the World Maritime University and is an Emeritus Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His research focuses on international shipping regulation, marine environmental protection, and Blue Economy development. He actively contributes to maritime law reform globally, drafting legislation for numerous countries and advising on safety, environmental protection, and Blue Economy initiatives. His pro bono work supports developing nations in legal frameworks for maritime governance.
Education: BA (Natal), BA Honours (Natal), LLB (Natal), LLM (Southampton), PhD (Southampton).
Key roles include Chairperson of South Africa’s Maritime Safety Authority under Nelson Mandela and representation at the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO). He also serves as a judge in marine inquiry trials and participates in IMO-led casualty investigations. His publications span maritime law textbooks, legislative drafts, and peer-reviewed articles addressing seafarers’ rights, admiralty jurisdiction, and piracy-related legal challenges.
Teaching includes postgraduate courses on Admiralty Law, Wet Law, and Seafarers’ Law at CCLS. His work bridges legal theory with practical policy, emphasizing transnational collaboration in maritime governance.
